Shrubs and trees; leaves, evergreen, alternate to mostly opposite, simple, and usually with an entire (not toothed) margin; all species are woody, with essential oils; flowers, usually in cymes, bisexual, regular, 4 or 5 free or united, often nearly circular petals; the stamens are usually very conspicuous, brightly coloured and numerous (‘fluffy’ look); the ovary is positioned inferior, sometimes half inferior and consists of several united carpels; fruit, a berry, drupe, capsule or nut.
