Scolymus, Greek skolymus, an artichoke. This is also the name used by Pliny for the Spanish oyster-plant,
maculatus, spotted.
The Hebrew name: חוח, hah, brier, thorn; related to Aramaic: חוחא, hoha; Akkadian: hàh
( = thorn), hahhu, hàyahu ( = thorn).
