Bene Zion - Haruzim Nature Reserve
שמורת בני ציון
There are three underwater sandstone ridges off the coast of Israel and another two on land.
Bene Zion - Haruzim Nature Reserve is located on the western slope of the eastern calcareous sandstone ridge.
These sandstone ridges are fossilized sea sand dunes consisting of an Eolianite rock named “Kurkar”. The sandstone ridges run mainly parallel to the present-day coastline and mark the coastlines at different periods in the past.
The Bene Zion - Haruzim slope drops steeply down to the valley between the ridges in which the Poleg Swamp once extended.
The reserve is unique in its variety of red loam soil types, among them "husmus" (red loam mixed with limestone).
